 Dr Purohit named one of US top surgeons

The Consumers Research Council of America, a Washington-based consumer organisation, has named Dr Surendra K Purohit, MD, as one of America’s top surgeons in General and Vascular Surgery for 2006. The award adds to the many other national honours and fellowships Dr Purohit has received in the past for achievements in his area of expertise.

Since 1977, Dr Purohit, younger brother of Banwarilal Purohit, former MP, has been a prominent general and vascular surgeon in New Orleans, USA and has continually held different leading positions at several area hospitals, including St Tammany Parish Hospital and Lakeview Regional Medical Centre, New Orleans, USA. He brought specialised techniques in general vascular surgery to both hospitals and oversaw upgrades in their operations. “To be a good surgeon you must have a good knowledge of medicine,” says Dr Purohit. He is currently the Medical Director of Gulf States Health Services, a long-term acute care facility in Covington, and is an Assistant Professor of Surgery at Tulane University and chief of staff at Lakeview Hospital, North Shore, New Orleans USA. Dr Purohit graduated in medicine with specialisation in internal medicine from Nagpur, when he was only 21. He continued his studies in England, where he specialised in accident trauma & orthopaedics and later moved to Boston where he became board-certified in general surgery. Missing the warm weather they loved in India, he and his family decided to come to Louisiana, USA. Dr Purohit works diligently and is grateful for the support his wife has given him throughout his career. His son, Dr Sunil Purohit, is an urologist and his wife, Needhi, specialises in rehabilitation medicine in Covington. Twin sons, Ajay and Vijay became entrepreneurs.
