 GMCH selected for DOTS-Plus treatment

Dot-Plus treatment is for the TB patients who develop Multi-Drug resistance
Patients of CAT-2 generally develop Multi-Drug Resistance(MDR)
DOTS-Plus treatment programme will be of two years duration

Department of Tuberclosis and Chest Medicine,Government Medical College and Hospital(GMCH)
has been chosen as one of the two medical colleges on the country to run a pilot project on DOTS-Plus treatment for treatment of Tuberclosis in drug resistant patients.
The DOTS-Plus programme will also be a part of the National Tuberclosis Treatment Programme which uses DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment Supervision) for TB treatment.If found successful at pilot level,DOTS-Plus will be implementedat national-level for patients who cannot be treated with either of the three present medicine regimes used for TB treatment.BesidesGMCH,the GMCH Ahmedabad is the other college to implement the project.DOTS Plus would cost the government a sum of Rs.3-4,000
per patient per month.
At present,the national programme uses three treatment regimes called as Cattegory I/II/III.Under the Cat-I four TB drugs (INH,Rifampicin,Ethambutol and Pyrazinamide) are given to the patients for six months.But DOTS-Plus programme will be of a very big duration-two years.
